To travel

is to live

Ghana · Germany · Great Britain · and the roads between

I travel to understand. I write it down so it is not forgotten.

I'm Remo Kurka: travel writer, photographer and builder of honest websites. Since December 2000, when I put Ghana-Net online, I have been telling Africa's stories without the picture-postcard gloss, the good and the difficult, so readers can decide for themselves.

Why I build websites the way I do

Before I built websites professionally, I tried almost every website builder and hosting platform there is. I learned what works, what breaks, and what gives real value. Today I build everything on my own platform: fast, mobile-first, easy to maintain, and without the huge costs of the big agencies.

My oldest site, Ghana-Net.com, has been online since December 2000, the oldest dedicated tourism portal for Ghana. Since then the network has grown to about 70 full websites across Africa and Europe, from forts and museums to national parks, live radio and whole country portals.

My photography

My photos have been published by The Guardian and Der Tagesspiegel, among others. Africa, Europe and Asia: forts, markets, festivals, landscapes and the people in them. Download collections instantly, order prints, or license single images.

Where I have been

Ghana, Burkina Faso, The Gambia, Nigeria, Kenya and Egypt. The snowy peaks of Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany, and the endless Baltic beaches from Denmark to Poland. Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, Italy and the United Kingdom. The Buddhas of Surin in Thailand. And the United States, before a certain president took office.

I don't travel for leisure. I travel for understanding, and I write it down here.

About the names

Remo comes from Latin and Italian roots. In Roman legend, Remus was the twin brother of Romulus, the founders of Rome; the name is often linked with the Latin word for "oar", someone who rows and sails.

Ghana comes from a Soninke title meaning "warrior king", used for the rulers of the medieval Ghana Empire, also called Wagadu, which lay in today's Mali and Mauritania between roughly the 9th and 13th centuries, not in the modern country of Ghana.
